Bothasig pip VOB away from home
Now if you thought Saturday’s game was exciting then words will not describe this nailbiter on a double header Sunday at VOB.
Devon Clarke started on the mound and after the first couple of frames we were 2-1 down and holding our own. A little lethargy in the field put us down by three a little bit later but with the score standing on 4-1, it was still a tight ballgame.
In the 6th, we put together some hits, they made some errors and we made them pay dearly for that. 5 runs scored put us 6-4 up and the spirits were up again.
Jean Sawyer came on to relive Dev and held the lead until in the bottom of the 8th.
VOB got a couple of runners on base and managed to get one run back. A few more batters got on base and quickly the bases were loaded with only one down. Now in this situation, the favour lies with the offensive side and they knew it – their tails were up and were looking aggressive.
So, the runner on third could be forgiven when after the batter drove one deep to left field, thinking its a base hit, runs via home to his dug out…only it wasn’t a base hit, it stayed up and ended in Kyle’s glove allowing him to trot to third while the misstaken runner looks on sheepishly. This was defintiely one of the oddest double play I’ve seen for a while retiring the side.
Top of the 9th, Bothasig fail to score. The 50 strong travelling supporters (including Ma Laura) are on the edge of their seats.
Jean whips one in and it’s grounded to short – a clinical throw out by Lukas the German,
The next batter….gets struck out swinging. Two down.
The next batter gets a walk. Does Jean look nervous?…everyone’s willing for the character to shine through and for that dreaded nightare frame to pass us over this one time.
The next batter swings and pops up….you could hear a pin drop…Keenan takes the catch and we win. The crowd goes wild!
Final score 6-5 to the Sig.
Today, I believe we saw a defining moment when the character shone through in the face of adversity. Great job boys.

VOB Weekly Round Up 22/1/2012This week we were on the road to Bellville to take on the Bellville Tygers. With club vs club fixtures, it means there are certain of our senior players spending up to 12 hours on the baseball field when we play away games. As a club we definitely appreciate these members commitment and we just request that parents and supporters keep reminding themselves of these members commitment to their kids when things don’t go the way we want it to go during the games. These coaches are volunteers and spend countless hours teaching your kids not only baseball, but life skills as well. The early starters had to be on the road by 7h15 and the weather in Bellville was scorching. This meant there was some lethargy amongst the players and the coaches had their work cut out to keep the kids in the games. Overall the baseball was of a good standard and we can be proud of our kids. Our junior softball team also resumed the second half of their season and coach Brian Lombard has been phenomenal in keeping the softball section operating under some trying times.
VOB weekly round up 14/01/2012Week two of the second half of the WP season meant that VOB would host Westridge Yankees at Chukker Road Sports complex. It also meant that junior baseball would be resuming after the long school summer vacation in Cape Town. Unfortunately, as is always common in youth baseball at this stage of the season, the players arrive back at training in drips and drabs and we have to battle to get the teams ready for their first fixtures. A big thank you to those parents and coaches who remain diligent and always attend the trainings. On to the games!
